Our Plan

Timeline

September 2017 - December 2017

Our timeline is restricted by our current course that we are in for the Fall Quarter of 2017, but we hope that future students of the course will build on our work and research as we have done with previous projects.

Step 1: Assemble our team, determine our mission, and construct a timeline.

Step 2: Construct a website and determine our contacts for communication.

Step 3: Contact Pilgrim Africa, and work out what we can do to take steps towards our mission.

Step 4: Continue research and construct a plan for the implementation of solar cookers in Beacon of Hope secondary school.

Step 5: Conclude our project, and assess our work.

We are researching solar cooking technologies that would be appropriate for our target communities in Uganda. We are working with our contact, Pilgrim Africa, an international development organization, to identify how solar cooking would be applicable in their Beacon of Hope secondary school in Soroti, Uganda. We then want to relay our information and ideas to the organization in order to create a discussion of solar possibilities.

We found that the current design for Insulated Solar Cookers would most likely not be applicable as the sole source of cooking in the Beacon of Hope school. We concluded that some solar elements could supplement their current cooking system to reduce the need for wood-burning.

Step 1 of our plan includes the use of a solar pool that could heat water to about 60 degrees Celsius. This could be accomplished by constructing a 10 cm depth pool that would then be covered with a plastic cover to absorb and trap heat from sunlight throughout the day.

Insulated Solar Cookers

We found that the current models of insulated solar cookers wouldn't fit into our plan due to some limitations that include the amount of food that needed to be cooked and the times in which meals were served in the day. However, we still believe that the insulated solar cookers are a viable option in other communities.
